The story behind Echo
Every book should be listenable — for everyone, not just those who can afford another subscription.
Why I built this
Hi — I'm Daniel. Echo started with a frustration you might share: millions of great books, papers, and documents exist only as text, and every app that promised to read them aloud wanted to meter it. Credits that run out mid-chapter. Voices that stop working in airplane mode. The natural-sounding narrators locked behind a subscription while the free tier gets the robot.
So I built the opposite. Echo's voice engine runs entirely on your phone — no server between you and your book — and I've spent months tuning it for what actually matters in an audiobook: how a sentence breathes, where a paragraph pauses, how a name gets pronounced the same way in chapter one and chapter forty. The good voices are in the free tier, because running on your device means your listening costs me nothing.
The principle I keep coming back to: most features should be free, so people who don't have the means can still use them. Premium exists for listeners who want the signature narrators — and it keeps the free tier free for everyone else.
I'm not trying to replace human narrators. I'm trying to make the millions of books that will never get a studio recording listenable — for students, for people with visual impairments or dyslexia, for anyone whose eyes are busy but whose mind isn't.
What we stand for
Free First
Most features are free so that people who don’t have the means can still use them. The neural voices are in the free tier — not dangled behind a paywall.
Quality
We do not compromise on voice quality. Our customized Kokoro pipeline is tuned for multi-hour listening — pronunciation, prosody, pacing, and voice character all fight the drift that breaks other TTS engines.
Privacy
Your documents and reading habits belong to you. Echo processes content on-device — your books never leave your phone, and nobody gets to censor what you read on your own device.
Honesty
No credits that mysteriously run out, no per-hour caps, no bait-and-switch billing. What is free stays free, and Premium is exactly what it says: two signature narrators and future perks.

Development began in 2024. The app is real and in closed testing — here's what's built versus what's coming, plainly labeled.

Echo is built by one person — me, Daniel — which is exactly why it works the way it does. No growth team pushing subscriptions, no investor asking why listening isn't metered. When something in the narration bugs you, the person you email is the person who fixes it.
